There are two words that describes my work philosophy ….Holistic and Ethical. Holistic nursing required one to not just treat the diagnosis, but to empathize with the whole person, providing services and care to help heal spiritually as well as physically. As far as the ethics, according to Businessdictionary.com, the definition of Ethical is : Equitable, fair, and just dealing with people that, although pragmatically flexible according to the situation and times, conforms to self-imposed high standards of public conduct. The ethics of Nursing goes much, much deeper. Your ethical backbone must be used for the purpose of patient and family advocacy. One must balance the interest of the hospital with the evermore important desires and needs of one’s patients. All of this must be done with evidence-based nursing skills and knowledge. Adding to this balancing act is my autonomy-always strive to work in an evidence-based culture to improve the standards of care of each patient. This leads to individualized care, which leads full circle back to holistic nursing.
